Castle Point, April 28th. 1852. Sir, I have the honor to inform you that I have completed a sketch survey of teWiremu and Otene's block, and am about to survey the coast. I commenced the survey on the 29th. March and have this day returned to Castle Point, I can only give you a very rough estimate of the content in acres of the block say 100,000 acres, the reserves for Natives are few, and unimportant; one third of the block is covered with fine timber; the open country is generally poor, barren and very broken, being covered with short fern and very little grass; the boundaries through the Bush were cut by the party of Natives accompanying me who want me to pay them, but which I refused to do, and refered them to you; the boundaries are well marked by holes in the ground as at Heretaonga. It will be necessary for me upon the completion of the coast survey to plot my work and must request you to send me two sheets of Antiquarian and two sheets of double elephant drawing paper and a few HHH pencils. I should wish you to direct Mr. Park to allow me the use of the tools in the Survey Office at Ahuriri necessary for the mapping the block just surveyed. Hori Niania has sent me the boundaries of the other block which will extend along the Coast from Ohanga Northwards along coast to a stream, about 6 miles Southward of Tautane; but the natives think that the internal boundaries must be left till summer time. I have thought it right to acquaint you as soon as possible with this. I also enclose some receipts for labor on this survey; and send my billhook to be repaired as it cannot be done here. I am sorry that the receipts are so much damaged, but they fell into some water accidentally. You may depend upon my getting on with the Coast survey as fast as possible. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant, C. Louis Pelichet.
