Napier June 20th 1870 My dear McLean Hart will tell you about Mangateretere, it appears now that the Deed of Mortgage of the rent makes you liable for it in some way - I have seen Williams and he is very much cast down at the thing being given up, he is also sanguine he could make it pay even at present rental - I am not - After you have seen Hart telegraph to me what you think - if you decide that I shall keep Williams on for the time, as he is, all right I can do so - the complications of this confounded affair are certainly most difficult I do not know who drew the Deed of Mortgage of the Lease to you, but it is a nice thing to be liable for the rent of that place for 21 years and still have no position of control over it - The thing is monstrous - I shd. say nothing of this - if it be so. Nobody here knows it - Your brother Alexander is one difficulty - if the thing has to be carried on i.e. cannot be dropped, on acct. of this rent liability, then he ought to assign his interest. The rent question is meantime in abeyance - the action of Karaitiana prevents any settlement. After seeing Hart advise me as to course with Williams so that I may settle before I leave with him - The man seems willing enough to act rightly - Mrs. Ormond had a line from Douglas today - He had got up all right. I have not done anything with Tareha and further advance to him. Hart seemed to think his assignment of his share without Karauria's wd. not be legal - so I thought unless he was very pressing it was better to fend it off for a time. I think I will get my work pretty well finished up so as to be able to leave about Sunday next will you manage to send Luna for me Always yours truly J.D. Ormond
