Napier Jny. 11, 1867 Sir, Since my last letter there has been a political meeting at the Meeance Hotel. Your Honors name was mentioned but it was agreed you should represent the largest constituency that is the Town. Messrs. Tiffen and Whitmore hinted as much to the meeting that you understood such was to be the arrangement. Mr. Maney was the best received - next to him Mr. Tiffin - but Col. Whitmore got a tremendous overhauling by Bousfield. Mr. Tiffen also came in for a share of public baiting. However Sir, every wheel has got a wheel within it and I have learnt this morning that Maney has been obliged to withdraw it is said by the best authorities on a/c of pressure likely to be placed on him by the Bank at the instigation of whom your Honor can well imagine. There is some talk of Bousfield being brought forward. There is at present a great flood in the Meanee River - carried away thousands of posts last night and this morning - rain fell during the last 24 hours is 51/2 inches - At last the Artesian well is a perfect success, throws water 26 feet above the level of the ground. They expect to find water by sinking Peacocks well 6 feet further - E. Davis and J. Francon are the successful owners of the well - a private enterprise - There have been 2 sudden deaths one from affection of the brain after an illness of 12 hours - a boy from the Meanee Hotel - and Peet the Cook binder at Mr. Woods - was drowned in the surf in company with the Messenger, Hayman and 1 other - a great number of children have died from dysentery - but it is becoming less violent. Trusting your Honor has enjoyed yourself, I have the honor to be Sir Your most ob. St., Geo. Thos. Fannin
