Whangaroa 12th Novr. 1855 My dear Sir, In my last note I mentioned that a payment of £400 had been made for Karioi the deed for which is now at Auckland and notwithstanding your letters I fear a difficulty will be thrown in the way of sending me money. Mr. Kemp enclosed me a copy from the Coll. Secretary in which I am repudiated as a Dist. Commr. I am to be employed surveying the exterior boundaries of land already purchased from the Govt. and am to be paid at the rate of £300 to receive my pay from the survey office in Auckland, or Taranaki. Now this is so opposed to the terms of your letters that I am at a loss how to proceed I acted under your instructions in paying the money at my disposal and I shall expect the Govt. at least to send me the sum required to redeem the promissory note £75 issued to the natives for the land. I have several reports made on small blocks of land in the district but I shall not forward them for the present until I became more enlightened on the subject by yourself or Mr. Kemp. I shall continue to proceed with a few surveys here until I hear from you and provided you approve of the step I shall send you my resignation as surveyor, After the survey of the land in this neighbourhood shall have been completed on which instalments have been paid by you. Two reasons which induced me to seek employment in your dept was to have you as my superior officer alone and that permanent occupation was promised. I perceive plainly now that I shall be employed for a time only as surveyor and they will discharge me when the principal part of the work is done. However I shall wait patiently until I hear from you on the subject of the Coll. Secretary's letter In the meantime, Believe me to remain ever yours faithfully, J. Rogan Donald McLean Esq., Nelson. I am out of funds except a small supply of my own which I feel no disposition to advance to labourers particularly as the Govt. have behaved unfair towards me as regards my pay and the work will consequently stand over for a time. I communicated with Joseph on the subject of the Bridle Road and shall report to you when I receive from him the required information. Rundle and six men are here by the "Oceana" W. Nero is delighted and I arranged everything satisfactorily between them the mill is to be commenced forthwith. I am happy to say the natives behaved nobly with their money which has gone far and wide. J. R.
