Kaipara 30th July, 70 My dear Sir, I hardly like to bother you with even a small note at a time like the present while you are engaged in the Assembly but I cannot help saying that although I have not written to you since my return from the Chathams I have swallowed all the debates of the house, I could find to read and now begin to breathe free as regards the present Ministry and especially as regards yourself I consider you have distinguished yourself as a Minister of Native affairs, but that I knew you would do years ago. The letters you have written to the Natives in this district in my absence at Whare Kaueri have done more good than you are aware of and everything here is as smooth as water running. The Court at the Chathams passed off very well - we had an awful passage there and back. I am quite sick of the sea since that trip but I have to go to Napier soon. How odd it is that I never could get there in your time. Douglas came up to me in Town the other day and I thought he came from the skies. Why I believed he was along with you. We had a talk together and he is coming out to Te Makiri when I come back. I think I can entertain him for a time at least you know I have plenty of room. Mrs. Farr is here and desires to be kindly remembered to you. I have been busy for some time past writing and you shall hear from me soon about one or two official matters. I have written to you about the P.B. business. I think the logic and reason is with me and I hope you let the account stand as was rendered by me - We had a good deal of trouble and I had some unusual expence at that place even in entertainment alone. I shall write you a long letter by next mail. Your's, J. Rogan.
