New Plymouth June 18th. 1851. Sir, In reply to your Memorandum of 7th. June, calling for particulars of a complaint I had made against Private Stewart, I am now in a position to give it. The enclosed papers will explain the offence, which was of a gross nature. I perfectly well remember from the appearance of Stewart on the morning of 3rd. June 1850, that he had been drunk on the previous night, but the circumstances were carefully concealed from me, and only recently discovered. With regard to Private Medland's absence during the whole of the 22nd. of March last, I am told it was occasioned by drunkenness. He was in the same condition on the 25th. of the same month. I have the honour to be Sir, Your most obedient servant (Signed) H. Halse Sergt To:- D. McLean Esq. J.P. Inspector of Police.
