The Camp Sept. 6th /64 Dear Sir I have received the deeds of the Porangahau block - but I had gone over the ground before it arrived with Nopera when I decided that Nopera was right - Since then I have seen Capt. Newman and have been over the ground with him, and explained my reasons for stating that Nopera was correct, but to no purpose he persists in stating that a swamp on the Native's side of his fence is the correct boundary, and although the stream shown on the plan corresponds with the stream which I pointed out to him as his boundary still he says that surveys are sometimes wrong therefore this survey may be wrong that is the surveyor may have surveyed the wrong stream, he says that his purchases should be up to the purimu stream which is the swamp - I have sent a small tracing to Mr. Weber for the office which will explain the matter better than this statement - The question seems to be well known about here and all say that Capt. Newman is wrong amongst others I saw Grant who is of that opinion. It is strange that the purimu is not mentioned in the deed - Capt. Newman says that he will have the ground surveyed by a private surveyor which I told him he might do if he liked but it would make no difference - I will endeavour to get something in the way of native curiosities for Colonel Bwyer but I am not much in the way of them now, besides I was trying to get some for the Otago Exhibition - I beg to thank you sincerely for your kindness in trying to get my salary raised and for speaking of me in the kind manner you did in the council, - but that is but one of the many favours you have shown me - which are wholly out of my power ever to return - but with a sincere hope that you will prosper in all things.
