New Plymouth Taranaki 17th March 1863 My dear Sir, I am delighted to find by the papers just received that you have been duly elected Superintendent of the Province of Napier. My since and fervent prayer for you is that all your good efforts may be crowned with lasting prosperity. I was in Auckland on the 5th and 6th of January last and was sadly disappointed in not seeing you. Some of the Provincial authorities in this place, who from their name and position should be emulative of being high-minded and honorable have never ceased to persecute me since the time that I was appointed Engineering Surveyor of this Province. On the 6th Inst. their efforts prevailed, for on that day I received a letter from Mr. Domett (who is now here terminating my employment with the Government) As I cannot get any of my farming land, and as my income for the next four or five years not sufficient to keep my family I must be occupied somewhere. Here, there is not anything to do; but, it occurs to me that my particular knowledge and experience might be advantageously employed in your Province. I will therefore by next mail, as I cannot today the steamer so soon sails, address to you an official letter which perhaps you may be pleased to submit to your Council and tell me the result. My daughter Frances has returned from India, she has lost her husband he died from an attack of the liver. I saw Mrs. Wilson this morning she told me that she had written to you, I shall therefore not attempt to give you any further particulars respecting this place and people knowing that she is a full and faithfull correspondent. You will be glad to hear that the Governor has decidedly improved in strength since his arrival. I have had two or three short conversations with him his expression and feeling towards me is most kind. I have hitherto refrained from saying a word in regard to the treatment and opposition, I have experienced from the rulers of the place - It will all come to light in due time.
