St. ''Star of the South'' Kawa Kawa My Dear McLean, After being carried to Auckland there being no landing at Awanui or Waiapu we tried it again yesterday on our return but it was impossible to land and we were driven by a Southerly gale up here. I shall now ride over to Waiapu. Morgan and several have come to meet me. Morgan has just returned from Roukokore and the Kaha. He reports all well there. They have twenty nine stand of arms there and at Maraenui. They all say that their reliance is on you and no one else. They have two casks of ammunition only so that they cannot do much either for good or evil, but it is satisfactory to know that they are well disposed. Morgan was pleased to get your letter. Wikiriwhi has been enticed to Patea. Sixty-Four men have gone with Hobene I have not yet been able to learn what inducements were held out to them but I shall know when I get home. They are still anxious that you should settle the land business as soon as possible as I stated to you in my official. I shall keep you informed of all that goes on -- Morgan tells me that they have been only waiting my return to have a large meeting to discuss different matters. Your letters doubtless will form one subject. Morgan tells me that he has just heard that te Kooti's next move is to be on Wairoa and Turanga. He therefore asks me to warn you. It seems that te Kooti has been petitioning the King for powder and caps but has not been successful. He is short of ammunition which is lucky, but every precaution should be taken that he gets no supplies. A vessel has been reported on this coast somewhere with powder on board. The revenue cutter was in pursuit of her when I left Auckland. I saw Pollen. He is in a great apparent state of distress on account of your difference with Ministers. He expressed his opinion that the E. Coast required fully as much looking after as the West. I suppose this will reach you after your return from Wellington. T trust your visit will have proved to be of more importance to the welfare of the country than the mere compliment to the Prince. Morgan has heard all about your treatment by Ministers and is indignant but says that you can soon put them out of the way. I am just off so I will not say any more till next opportunity. ever yours, J.H. Campbell.
