My dear Susan Your note of today was on the table when I came in from town. I was glad to find that you did not suffer by your imprudence in coming out in the cold last night. I cannot promise to dine at Mr Hargreaves being under several engagements during this week but I shall certainly call in the course of a day or two. The McLean friend I have seen and given her the baby's dress to make up herself. We may call on her any day this week. She is really a nice affectionate person. I must be excused from calling to see you while I have other duties to attend to and while Mamma, on the slightest pretence, wishes to direct her ill-judged abuse against me even at her dinner table where greater courtesy is expected, and most generally observed. Of course I consider you blameless when all these exhibitions of bad taste and temper are exhibited and as such remain very faithfully yours Donald McLean
