Wellington 18th. April 1848. Sir, I have the honour to acquaint your Excellency that the Ngatiapa tribe living between Wangaehu and Turakina made proposals to me when on my journey hither, to dispose of a large tract of land to the Government. The line of coast claimed by this tribe extends from Wangaehu to some miles South of Rangiteiki; but I have not been able, from the hurried nature of my journey, to ascertain the exact termination of what is agreed between them and the Manawatu natives, to be their Southern boundary, further than it is said to be halfway between Rangiteiki and Manawatu. The right of the Ngatiapa tribe to dispose of their landed property has not, until very recently, been admitted by Te Rauparaha, and the other Chiefs who conquered that part of the country. One of these Chiefs, Te Whatanui, who died two years ago, claimed as far as the Turakina river, where he erected a boundary post to designate that his share of the conquered country extended so far. This Chief's son, who is residing at Otaki, and Te Rauparaha, have informed me that they do not intend asserting any further claim to the Ngatiapa country; so that a purchase might no doubt be easily effected, from the desire evinced by the Ngatiapas to dispose of a great portion of their land; which, from its being well watered, and covered with an abundance of natural grass, is particularly adapted for sheep and cattle Stations.
