Mohaka Blockhouse January 10th, 1869. Sir, I have the honor to inform you that news was brought me last night, 10 o'clock, that the Hau Haus were in force at the Waihou. I went across to the Pa, and saw Hoane and several others. They confirmed the report, so far, that a native named Watter, living on the Waihou, left there on account of the Hau Haus being so near, and went to live at some other place. On Friday last he went back to see to his affairs, and found the place ransacked; all his things stolen; and his horses shot. The place had the appearance of having been visited by a large number of people. He went to the top of a high range to get a view, and found them camped in the next valley. He has come in to Mohaka, and some one has been sent to the Wairoa. There are no scouts out in that direction at present. The distance from Mohaka south to where enemy seen, is an easy day's journey. I have the honor to be Sir, Your most obedient servant (Signed) J.W.P. Lavin. To:- His Honor The Superintendent.
