Mosgiel Warehouse Stafford Street Dunedin 5th. September 1872. My dear Maclean, I received a Memo. No. 1019 from Colonel Gorton ordering 1000 yards of "Mosgiel Plaiding" as per sample, No. F. 99 of our Invoice, but of a dark blue color. I am very much obliged to you for the order, but we cannot fulfil it, as to make this dark blue require an Indigo Dye Plant, as the color is Indigo; and as yet we have not attached this to our establishment. The first cost of an Indigo Dye Plant is very heavy; besides it is very costly to work it, and we must wait a little while before attempting this, although we have written to an Agent in Britain to give us all information as to cost, etc. etc. We could give you a black, but we could not guarantee it to stand the Sun's rays. I am afraid it would turn an ugly brown. Greys of all shades we can make, and make to stand. If this would suit, we shall very soon turn it out. The Plaids are in hand, and the Tweeds; we had hoped for the large order, but we must be content with the small one; although we cannot do the small order at the same price as the large one; probably Id. per yard more. Yours truly (Signed) A.J. Burns.
