Turanganui January 8th 1869 My dear McLean, I received yours the other day with much pleasure as it assured me you had not forgotten me. My time at the front was not my own and every moment was occupied. Col. Whitmore always imagine a subordinate officer is a being to be made the same use of as a private - he scarcely recognizes a distinction. We have got on right well this time against Te Kooti thanks to Ropata's firmness and Whitmore's good sense in listening to him. I wish Mr. Richmond would take your advice (if you could be persuaded to give it him) in dealing about the Lands here, already I fancy he shews a weakness or fear of incurring responsibility. Why not take all lands in the district leaving large reserves to compensate friendly natives out of sales. I will write more tomorrow. I am very tired and rather unwell just now. Kind regards, Yoursever sincerely, Chas Westrup
