My dear Fraser, I intended to have been with you this week but owing to a southerly gale on Wednesday it was useless to attempt the Wairoa I am now waiting replies to letters from Wellington in reference to your suggestion about a combined movement. I see no other means by which the Natives at Waikaremoana can be reduced, they may be followed up from one side, but that will not extinguish the rebellion. In reference to the food taken I should say that it should be taken care of as commissariat supplies for the European and Native forces, and that none should be wantonly destroyed. It is an immense advantage to get such a valuable addition to our Commissariat at a time when funds for carrying on our operations are so very low. Richardson has been most anxious to get back he is not to blame for the delay. I have been daily in hopes of getting replies from Stafford, by the "Sturt" and I wished to have something positive in the shape of instructions to send to you which will account for the detention. The Huntress is now to ply regularly to the Wairoa at least for a time. I can assure you I am delighted with what has been done at the Wairoa. The force under you has fully sustained its well earned reputation. When these wars are over, I shall do my very best to obtain some position that may to some extent remunerate you for the benefit you have conferred on the Colony at large - I feel exceedingly sorry for poor Hussey he seemed such a quiet unassuming and good officer.
