Napier July 20th, 1865 My dear Sir George Grey, I enclose two copies of Native letters addressed to the tribes of the Bay of Plenty by the Petane natives. Your Excellency will perceive by these letters that an attack upon Ahuriri is mediated. Messengers have started to the Bay of Plenty three days ago, how far these tribes will respond to the invitation is a matter upon which I am unable to form an opinion. I notice by the Auckland papers that troops are being removed to Auckland from Tarranaki. I hope if any movement towards Waikato is in/contemplation that intimation may be sent here to enable me to adopt such additional precautionary steps as such a contingency wd. necessitate. Exposed as this Province is to any incursion from the numerous tribes on its N. E. frontier it is most important that we shd. be advised of what the Govt. Contemplate in reference to such military movements as may affect the safety of the inhabitants. I remain Sir, Donald McLean
