23 December 1862 Maraekakaho My dear Donald The bearer Mr Weber came here and wished one of us to speak to the natives to get the timber out of the Waka Perau to make the bridges over the creeks on the Omahu Road. I told him to apply to you as you understand native matters better than us. I should think the natives cannot object to such a proposal as that being more for their interest than any others. Renata has been the most popular man about the bush of late. Alex will gave you all the other improvements regarding the sheep. Old Malcolm says we will get all our number. I have no doubt but we shall we know of about 300. The fearful drought spreads them all over the country in all directions. We have 84 bales finished. I hope you will be up with Alex.
