Auckland May 27th. 1872. My dear McLean, I sent you a telegram this morning, and now enclose you a formal application, which I sincerely hope you will be pleased to approve of, and recommend. As far as the duties of the position are concerned, I feel perfectly competent to perform them; and it is possible I may be able to assist in Native matters, by communicating with yourself. However, you are the best judge. But should this application meet with your approval, I will feel much obliged, and thank you. The native Chiefs, especially Pokiha, were much pleased with the Review, which went off with credit. Mr. Pucky has not yet returned, nor have I received further instructions; and an idle life, is, to me, one of the hardest to live. I remain, Yours very truly, (Signed) W. McDonnell.
