Auckland May 27th. 1872. My dear McLean, I sent you a telegram this morning, and now enclose you a formal application, which I sincerely hope you will be pleased to approve of, and recommend. As far as the duties of the position are concerned, I feel perfectly competent to perform them; and it is possible I may be able to assist in Native matters, by communicating with yourself. However, you are the best judge. But should this application meet with your approval, I will feel much obliged, and thank you. The native Chiefs, especially Pokiha, were much pleased with the Review, which went off with credit.
