My dear McLean, I have just seen Chanon, who tells me that you are about to go to England, and does not give a flourishing account of Native Affairs. The mail goes in a few hours, and I am so hurried that I have no time to say much; but you may guess what I feel. On the whole I am inclined to think your absence will be for the best. It is clear to me that Sir George means to hand everything over to Ministers, and you would not be able to serve under them. When they have tried their hand at managing Maoris for a few months, they will find the want of the only man whom the natives really confide in, and will clamour for your return. Pray go to the Colonial Office at once. Ask for Mr. Cox. If not at home, for Mr. Fortescue, and I am inclined to believe you will meet a very pleasant reception. You are well known by name and character to any one in the office. I wish I could have one talk with you again, but that is not possible at present unless we are detained here even longer than I expect. Remember, however, that while we are in Tasmania there will always be a warm welcome for Donald McLean from his sincere friend, T.G.B. P.S. I have not yet got my Commission. I am waiting for it anxiously. 15th. November. Sydney. P.S. If you could come here you would be able to find out where we are by asking at Government House. If our Commission does not come by this mail we shall go into the country. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
