16 April 1867 Glenorchy My dear Donald Mr Brandon yesterday spoak to me and told me I would have to pay up tommorrow if possible. I told him I would try and do so as I cannot make anything out of on with the cattle at preasant to meet the demand it has placed me in a sad state and I do not know on earth how to act. I am sending the cart down tommorrow with the pigs which will bring about £25 of the amount. The total amount required is £94. Butter on hand is worth at 1/6 £47, oats to be sold £10, Mr Brown owes me £7, a man in Hamden owes me £10. Where I go today and try and see to ... to ... or get money from him but as Brandon expects the money tommorrow what am I to do. I hope you will not allow me to be ruined altogether and will rise the amount for me and you will not be longer than a monthof of it. For God sake do this for me or I will go distracted. I am in such a state that I cannot write. I leave it to yourself trusting you will rise the amount for me just for a few weeks when you will be paid. I was in hopes one would buy as many cattle as would anount to fifty pounds but I find we cannot deal at preasant. In haste Your affectionate brother Archibald John McLean
