Kaipara 23rd June/71 My dear Sir, I reached here last night soaked after coming from Auckland. I hope you will have received the copies of the orders all safe. I want to call your attention to the "Telegraph" which has come off the stocks at last with a large bill of £160 deductions £36 which she has earned from time to time. The Govt. must pay it I am not able, I had to borrow £500 to carry on fencing you will know the full meaning of this. Farming is a bad business. I am anxious to hear if you have purchased the Ngatarawa you will have then the nicest estate in New Zealand I was very much put out that Chiswick and I could not sell Akitiu as I know it would be a relief to your mind besides enabling you to concentrate your estate. I am off on a tour throughout Kaipara and hope to be back in 8 or 10 days after I start on Tuesday next. The weather here continues so rainy that the Maoris are keeping indoors. I hope to have a letter from you when I come back. Mrs. Farr is better. I have almost cut Mount Albert. Hoping you are well and in your usual good spirits I am yours, J. Rogan The Hon. D. McLean, Napier or Wellington.
