28.9.70. Dear McLean, I think Moules note very satisfactory. I think whereever we have redoubts or blockhouses they ought to be really good and defensible. The unfortunate affair at Turoturomokai was entirely owing to the insufficiency of the redoubt. If it had been like the two erected between Patu and Waihi all the natives on the Coast would not have taken it. I was glad to hear from Branigan that Waihi is being strengthened. It is a strong position, and not out of reach for a sudden raid by Titiko, who must have been very near it a week ago. A feeble redoubt is rather a trap than a protection. Yours very sincerely, Wm.
