Camp Waitara 3 Apl/60 My Dear Sir, After a Short passage on Sunday afternoon we reached here and found everything as quiet as usual. The Revd. Mr. Garavel with his natives arrived on Saturday with news from the north substantiating all we have heard of the Waikatos who do not sympathise with Willie King. He goes to Town this evening and will of course give you the particulars. On Sunday night we were roused by the watch blazing away at what they conceived to be natives but if any were about they soon left and after some time the firing was stopped by the Coll. It was ascertained on Sunday that the Cows and bullocks belonging to the camp were missing, supposed to have been taken possession of by the enemy. R. B. with a band of the ''Intelligence corps'' were to have gone in search of them yesterday. In the mean time a mob of half wild horses came galloping along the road towards the mouth of the river, they were surrounded by R. B. and party who drove them into the camp, but the Coll. ordered them to be driven out again, soon after this aparty of W. Kings natives were seen not very far from the Camp evidently in search of the horses. B. and another started off in the direction and hoisted a white handkerchief on a ramrod which annoyed Coll. Sillary who sent a messenger after him to return, after all, the natives got away without holding communication with us notwithstanding the flag. W. King has fortified himself by erecting 2 very strong pas at Mataitawa (near Kairoa) supposed to be for himself and his friends if they should ever come from the South. The Natives and R. B. dont accord and so long as Capt. B. and Lieut. Stockman are here of course I cannot have anything to say to them as I dont know how far I am authorized to interfere - should you hear of any opportunity of going to Auckland please dont fail to let me know. The apples were most acceptable. Always faithfully yours, John Rogan
