Thames 17th July 1872 My dear Sir With reference to the dispute with reference to the Kauri trees on the ikataia line of telegraph. Taipari and I have gone fully into the matter and as soon as we can find time we propose going over that portion of the line and ascertaining the number of trees cut down on each persons land in order to fix the amounts to be paid definitely this will also set at rest the dispute existing between the Ngatipu and Ngatikarona with reference to this subject which has arisen partly from the Ngatipu having offered some of the land to Mackay. Of course we do not wish to pay for the timber which has been cut down upon the land for which negociations have been entered upon by Mr. Mackay on behalf of the Govt. - Taipari has with my knowledge and concurrence written privately to you on the subject of some of these purchases of Mackays enclosing copies of two native letters complaining of the I suppose this is a question for the Trust Commissioner to enquire into. We have made certain recommendations to Kemp with respect to the Piako and Waitoa land matter which we are now waiting a reply to, upon the receipt of which we will further communicate with you possibly Kemp may have submitted our proposals to you - As the provincial Govt. appears willing that the sum to be given inclusive of recent advances to Tipa and Erua shall be e propose that Ngatimaru claimants shall out of that receive £150, and Honi Tipa and the Ngatipaoa have £97 additional to Mr. Mackays offer which in all will bring the figures up to £1000 Waitoa purchase Mackays amyt. 550 prepaid Ngatimaru 150 Ngatipaoa additional 97 £1000 Your obdt. Servt. E.W. Puckey
