Tokatoka, 19th March, 1857. My Dear Sir, I returned from Whangarei last Monday after an excursion in the forest with Johnson for the purpose of having the inland boundary of the Waikiekie B. pointed out for the information of the Surveyor who is now engaged on that purchase. I called at Tirarau's settlement to acquaint him where I had been, we had a long conversation and he requested me to tell the Ngatiwhatua tribe that he had written to you for money on account of Tangihua, at which they are rather offended and begin to threaten a withdrawal from the survey of the lands now in progress should you give way to Tirarau's demands. The survey of the large B. is being proceeded with but will take a considerable time longer than was anticipated owing to the difficulty of carrying supplies so far inland for the Survey labourers --- Each party is allowed a certain number of men (4) --- others should be employed to carry provisions which would expedite the work very much, but with this I have nothing to do. I received a note from Mr. McCabe who is employed on the Manganui R. he says that the creeks are becoming so swollen from the late rain that it is likely the work will have to be abandoned for the winter. I am now about to visit Paikea's Settt. and shall follow up Mr. Buchanan who is employed on the Southern boundary of the large B. and I hope to receive a letter from you by the Messenger who carried a package to you some time ago --- If the survey can be completed and you can arrange to harmonise the two parties by dividing the money for Tangihua between them in some way, we shall I think, succeed in purchasing the whole country from the Natives as far as Hokianga --- Mr. Fenton is still engaged on the survey of Manukaus land for which £30 was paid by you. It will not be completed for some time yet as the Manganui extends inland much farther than was supposed. In the event of the survey of the large block being abandoned for the winter season I shall run into Auckland for the purpose of consulting you as to the propriety of surveying some land which will soon be offered to me on the Oruawhaio branch of Kaipara --- and in the meantime I am, My Dear Sir, Yours very truly, J. Rogan.
