Letter from Herbert Wardell to Donald McLean Esq. dated 30th. March 1859. COPY Private. Turanga 30th. March 1859 Wy dear McLean, I want you to give me five minutes about the Reserve here. You will remember a good deal was said some time ago about a House. This has been dropped because I am sure of a house till June 1860. However, I wrote the Colonial Treasurer on the 18th. January 1858, respecting the importance of having the land fenced, to prevent a difficulty I foresaw as likely to arise if it remained unenclosed and unoccupied, and offered to erect a fence, if I would be allowed its value in the event of my removal. He replied it would be considered in the preparation of the Estimates. I enclose a copy of his letter. As natives consented to allow trees to be felled, and there were fencers unemployed, I had the fence put up. It has been done very substantially, and has cost me . Now since the letter referred to, I have not written to, or heard from, the Government on the subject. Will you kindly advise me in the matter. It is somewhat serious to me, as it involves three years savings, and I begin to wish the money had been spent in land or something else, at Ahuriri. I write this in the confidence of friendship. I have written to Smith some chat of the place, which I would like you to know. Believe me, my dear McLean, yours very truly (Signed) Herbert Wardell. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
