Rotoaire, Decr. 30th, 1866. This letter will be explained to you by Takuira Tauteka a good man and firm friend his brother Hari Tauteka goes with him. My dear Maclean, Having now been through Taupo, I am quite satisfied of the safety of the whole district any Europeans may travel here - and will be treated with the greatest kindness. The people at Tokanu and at Pohipi's pah Tapuaeharuru are very anxious about their mills and have plenty of wheat but no means of grinding it. The mill at Tokanu is out of order - that at Pohipi's place has yet to be built - although the has the stones the timber and at least part of the machinery at his place. It is desirable to encourage this movement in every way - I have therefore promised on the part of the Govt. that a competent person should at once be sent up, to examine their mills have them put in order or erected. If you can get a competent man would you engage him at once - and send him up to Taupo - send a copy of this to the native Minister. Very truly yours, G. Grey.
