New Plymouth 2 January, 1858 My dear Sir, I called on Hone Ropiha about W. Ropiha's threat against Tupoki and found him and the Waisakaiho natives generally indisposed to interfere, and although Ropiha still declares the Puia shall be sold to Govt. on account of his quarrel with Tupoki, they will, I think, soon become reconciled. I have received a very good letter from Hopa, of Hauranga, explaining the taua on Climo for shooting one head of wild cattle on native land, and expressing his readiness to return the articles taken from Climo, if he will pay £6. Climo had offered £3 and I think a slight advance on that amount, will settle the case. I have not yet succeeded in recovering the fees and damages due from the Mahoetahi natives for their cattle impounded last November. They have however promised to pay for their fee, which is a point gained. I duly received your letter of the 8th of Decr. enclosing particulars of account for the purchase at Remuera, the balance of which shall be forwarded at the earliest oppy. I take this opportunity of again thanking you for the trouble you have taken in this matter. Hoping you are well, I remain, My dear Sir, Faithfully yours, H. Halse To:- McLean Esq.
