Brooklands May 13th. 1850. Dear McLean, As the Wellington Overland Mail leaves to-day, I think it right to enclose you a private note from Sinclair, which arrived by the last mail from Auckland. There are some official letters for you that Mr. H. Halse has taken charge of, and will, no doubt forward by this conveyance. We have no news here. I know, however, that it will be satsifactory for you to hear all is quiet with the natives; with the exception of a trifling fracas some of the Puketapus have had with William Bayley; when our friend Parrattena told Halse that if there was any idea of placing him in the Lockup, it could not be effected. But if effected, it could not hold him, as the natives were more powerful here than the white people; and he noticed Heke's conduct in defying the Europeans. I hope you got comfortably over your journey. I have written a few lines to William, which I will thank you to give him. I will arrange with Mrs. Hosking, agreeable to your request. I hope you will bear in mind the young Bull, of superior quality for Stock-getting. When you write, let me know what prospects there may be of the continuance of the New Zealand Company retaining the charge of us; for there are rumours that they have no idea of abandoning what they have not the means to maintain; so I conclude we must all sink or swim together. I see that chap Mr. J. Wakefield has come out again. It would have been as well if the blackguard had remained where he was; for he will taint a host. Yours truly (Signed) Henry King. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
