Turanganui Feby. 5th. 1869. My dear McLean, I was rather disappointed in not hearing from you last Mail. Being again left in command of the District I am of course very anxious to get authentic news of any Native movements which may possibly concern us here. Read says he is afraid you think he has gone over to the enemy as he did not see you this last trip of his. He says he called at the office without finding you, but his size prevented him getting up the hill to your dwelling. I have sent Tuke with the Constabulary on a scouting expedition up the main valley by the Opotiki track, Karapa -- a son of Tamihana's and the scoundrel who is said to have led Kooti's hand against the settlers here -- has arrived at Muriwhai. He reports Kooti as having 80 followers & making his way towards Opotiki where he had sent some people to make purchases etc. -- the plan of Opotiki is known where the ammunition is etc. It is just possible they will make raid on that settlement. Old Ihaka Wanga is here and feels inclined to stay sometime. Atkinson our R.M. has not had time to say much to him. I am keeping on with the defence of the place. With kind regards, Believe me to remain, My dear McLean, Ever yours truly, Chas. Westrup. Donald McLean Esqr.
