Waiuku July 27th 1861 My dear Sir With regard to the proceedings of Waikato I have nothing to communicate other than you are perfectly cognisant of. On a late visit to Waiuku I was present at a meeting of the Ngatihata at Mr. Constables to take into consideration the propriety of addressing his Excellency tendering their services for the protection of the Settlers there reiding having written three former letters to his Excellency they felt slighted at having received no answer to either they looking up to the Governor; almost the last words the Katipa uttered were Ko Kawana hei matua mo koutou The last dated the 13th Inst. I was present when it was written. From the intimacy subsisting between them and myself they do not hesitate to express their dissatisfaction at not receiving an answer to the last more particularly from the interest I take in their professions of loyalty at this critical crisis I am anxious that there should be no misunderstanding Would you be so kind as to inform me if it has been received as I am doubtfull wether it may not have miscarried though posted in the usual way at Waiuku. Yours very truly C. Marshall Donald McLean Esq. Auckland
