Letter from W.N. Searancke to Donald McLean Esq. dated 20th. January 1857. Mokau Heads 20th. January 1857 Dear Sir, With much difficulty, I have succeeded in completing my Official, in time for the Mail. For the last three days I have been completely prostrated by the complaint now so prevalent, called the Rewha rewha. I have, as you see, failed in getting the consent of the natives to the road being made; not from any opposition on their part, but, I think, an understood arrangement among them, that no road in the Country shall be made, without the general consent of all the Maoris. This is one of the results of the meetings at Taupo; and a constant agitation kept up by settlers, issued from Kawhia and Rangiawahia; which two places seem to be the Putaki's of opposition to the Government. I have completed the survey of the Rauroa Block, and at Ta Kerei's constantly expressed wish, I have come now to mark out the 50 acre sections for his sons at Awakino; which completed, I shall immediately proceed to Auckland via Rangiawhia, unless I find further instructions from you there, (at Rangiawhia). I am, dear Sir, very truly yours (Signed) W.N. Searancke. To:- D. McLean Esq. Auckland.
