New Plymouth 4th April, 1854. My dear Sir, I find that I have only time to write a few lines as, the post is just going to start. I have been working away amongst the Tapuae Natives and think I am getting on first rate, the opposition now is getting very feeble and I have great hopes that they will soon give way altogether. Old Kati (Terohutu) I think is coming round fast, Kawana consents, and old Hone Kohuru is as much now in favor of the sale as he was formerly opposed to it. Paringa is in a terrible fright and says it is of no use now having the greatmeeting that was talk'd of to take place at Waimate, and that he shant go he has been trying all he can to prevent my going to Taranaki as he says that from shame sake he is afraid some of the Chiefs will join me. After my Trip I will write you all particulars - I have had a chat with Cooper about what I have been doing, and also about my trip to the Southward, which he thinks will be a very good Plan. I think the state of things now in this settlement looks better than it has done for years past I hope it will go on improving trusting you have had a pleasant trip to Auckland, I remain, Yours truly, W. Carrington.
