My dear McLean, I enclose a letter for you which I took out of the last mail bag from Wanganui; I learn from Taratoa Hakariah who I saw at Otaki last Saturday that you have returned to Wanganui, the said Natives came to consult their friends concerning the threatened invasion of the Ngatiapu or rather the inclination of the latter to throw off their allegiance to the Ngatiraukawas - they also stated that if Haast does not leave his present locality, and comply with yours and my orders, they will take the law into their own hands. You have not yet given me the Receipts in Duplicate for the six pounds as requested, they are necessary for the Treasury and will leave my quarterly accounts remitted until. I receive them. The Fares at Tihoa and Waematu are the same as the other rivers, Police firemen and officials on duty free. No steamer yet, I am just leaving for Wellington. Ever yours, D.S. Durie.
