Taranaki 18 Augt 1852 My own pet I have just received your own and Papa's letters by the 'Kawai'. I feel vexed for the toothache that annoys you but you have too much Highland spirit to lose temper for such trifles. I wrote you in the morning I have nothing to add but I could not have the heart to enclose a fresh packet for Papa without sending a few lines to you little treasure. I am not displeased at your working. I am glad that you are able to sew and I consider idleness a great evil as well as a sure precursor of want. We must therefore be as industrious each in our proper departments as we can. This place looks quite lively with large and small vessels. Dr Sinclair sends you his kind regards. There are several enquiries for you and when you are expected to visit this place. As the wife of a public officer many eyes will be turned upon you and it requires great discretion and prudence on your part to merit general esteem. You should certainly write to Mrs Wilson. You have no excuse for not doing so. Tell her to hurry me back to scold me, to see that I dress neatly, etc etc etc. I must reluctantly my own dearest conclude for the present and I am ever your own devoted and affectionate husband Donald McLean Remember me to Jessie. Tell her I am looking out for a husband for her but I cannot get a Highlander. Give my regards also to Miss Hart, the Miss Hunters and Pauls. Mrs Featherston if you see her.
