(undated.) I have to recommend for the favourable consideration of His Excellency's Government, that a sum of Four hundred pounds, £400.0.0, should be paid to the native Chief Raniera te Iho, for himself and his tribe, out of the 5 per cents of lands sold by them to the Crown; which they are anxious to invest in erecting a Mill. It has been resolved publicly by the tribes of the lower Wairarapa, that the above sum should be laid out in erecting a mill. Raniera has been entrusted by all the claimants to receive the money, and undertake the management of all matters connected with its construction; and he proposes to get the machinery from England for this purpose. From the general good conduct of Raniera and his tribe, and their faithful observance to all treaties entered into with them, I would strongly recommend that this arrangement should be concluded at once, leaving the question as to the actual amount due for 5 per cents on lands ceded by them, to be hereafter decided.
