. Taranaki, 17 Decr., 46. My dear Sir, I received your note by a native this morning and am very glad to learn by its contents that Mr. Govett goes to Nelson instead of Mr. Bolland who report stated was to be sent there. My present object in sending a man to the South is to ascertain as quickly as possible whether or not there have been any late arrivals at your Settlement and whether I am wanted there at present. I am off from here in the morning to Waimate to await further instructions in reference to your Settlement and should you in the mean time hear of anything I hope you will lose no time in letting me know. This communication is you will perceive of a perfectly private nature so that if you hear any enquiries respecting me you can state that it is reported that I am at Waimate, and will be guided from what I hear from Wanganui as to whether I go there or not, you can scarcely make out this scrawl but I expect soon to have a quiet korero that will explain the nature of the affair - Basil is well and may probably soon pay you a visit. The school closes in a few days. I hear Mr. Savage is coming to your place is he to stop there any time? I have a deal to do and must conclude with kindest wishes Yours sincerely, Don. McLean.
