New Plymouth 24 June 1873. My dear McLean, I have not been able to get away to Mawhitiwhiti, but I am not sure that it is not just as well; there is a native, Karawira, belonging to the place, who has land at Puketotara and at the "Meeting of the Waters" - Waiwakaiho and Mangorei, who is always at me to look after his interests in the land at Waingongoro; I told him that to do that he must keep Pakeha interlopers out of the question, and I have written letters for him, and concocted messages, that he is satisfied have produced a salutary effect. He now wants to appear as a benefactor to the tribe by the introduction of the best varieties of kumera, I got some which I gave to Hone Pihama in 1867 and 8 - is it therefore asking too much if you would send the annexed list of kumeras to some native official in Auckland to obtain and send, I tried last year, but Rogan that I wrote to was out of the way at Napier I think. Old Karauria is a useful chap in the right direction, for he is not difficult to steer. A countryman of yours, and mine on one side, a Mr. Alexander has good prospects of getting up a saw mill Company to saw logs floated down the Waitara from Ngatimaru, he he seems enterprising, industrious, and fearless without being foolhardy. The Natives like him, I think he would work in the interests of the Govt. and that on the whole you will find him very serviceable in Ngatimaru. I enclose a few proofs of tomorrow's leading article that I have written for the "News". Yours ever truly Chas. Brown. Kumera for Karauria New Plymouth that he says can be obtained from Te Hemara, Mahurangi. Taurapunga Pakaurere Kumera Pakeha Whero Koemi Wakakumu And any other new, or large varieties. N.P. 24/6/73 C.B.
