Taranaki. August 25th. 1852. Sir, I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 21st. instant, enclosing a letter book containing correspondence relative to the Police and Native Land Purchase Departments, in this settlement; and forwarding at the same time, in addition to the Documents which were transferred to me on taking charge of this office, previous to your arrival here, several official letters connected with those Departments. Allow me to take this opportunity of tendering to you, my warmest acknowledgements, for the assistance and cordial co-operation I have received from you, during your short stay in this settlement; as well in the adjustment of outstanding questions; as in preparing the way for the opening of negotiations for the purchase of additional Blocks of land in this neighbourhood; assistance of so valuable a kind, that but for it, I have no hesitation in saying that many of the outstanding questions which have been so amicably settled, would have remained a source of difficulty and annoyance for a considerable period of time; and the negotiations for fresh purchases, which are now progressing with so cheering a prospect of speedy success, would not, in all probability, have reached their present stage for many months to come. I enclose, for your information, the copy of a list of the arms, accoutrements, and ammunition; and of the office furniture, etc., which were in charge of the Sergeant Major on my arrival in the settlement. I take this opportunity of expressing my gratification at the highly satisfactory state in which I found all the articles, which had been left in the charge of Mr. Halse. I have the honour to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant, (Signed) G.S. Cooper. Inspector of Police. To:- Donald McLean Esquire J.P. Land Commissioner. etc. etc. etc. Taranaki.
