Waitawa, "Wairoa" Jany. 19, 64. Dear Sir, The great meeting for the opening of St. Pauls church has taken place and the greater number of natives belonging to the valley upper and lower were present. I regret to say that owing to several unfortunate circumstances the affair has turned out almost barren of result, and the principal parties interested in getting up the affair are much disatisfied. It was unlucky that the Commissioner could not afford time and that the short time allowed should have been first wasted and then wholly interupted by the rain. I can not tell you of any matter of interest, beyond I might say that a general feeling of indiference and listlessness seemed to pervade the majority of those present - a general wish not to be stirred up and that matters should be left to take their own couse. I am not entirely without hope that the natives may show some disposition to sell. I have very little time to devote to enquiries and less to visit individuals and learn their sentiments. Two thirds of my time being taken on the raod. I am decidedly of opinion that good would result from a careful sifting of the opinions of the Upper river natives who are the real opponents to sales of land and these people I rarely ever see; at Nuhaka also and at Nukutaurua I think that land might be obtained. Of course I have not hinted at any desire to purchase but have merely sounded the views of such individuals as I have reason to believe favourable. Much care and patience is need in an investigation of the kind. I should like to refer to several matters of some importance but fear to occupy your time and also I shall have occasion to be in Napier the first week in next month when perhaps you will do me the honor to see me personally. The upper river natives were very loud in their expression of discontent at Kopu's gift, but the rain put a stop to the discussion, which was perhaps so far fortunate. I wish to add that do not write to any newspaper and do not hold myself responsible in any way for any thing my Father writes. You will understand my motive for saying this. I have to send you but a dull epistle, but should any thing of any moment occur, you may rely on my furnishing you with the fullest information without loss of time. I have the honor to remain Dear Sir, Your most obedt. servt. Geo. B Worgan.
