New Plymouth February 15th. 1851. Sir, I beg to forward the Police Report for the fortnight ending this day:- Sunday Parade. Henry Lawler examined, and dismissed, on his own recognizance in the sum of £5, to appear if called upon, this day fortnight. The schooner "Diana" Hopkins, from Kawhia, passenger - E. Tucker; cargo - 10,000 shingles, 2,000 feet sawn timber, 1 bag salt, 1 bag rice, 2 bags sugar. I posted a letter to you by this day's overland mail to Wellington. The "Diana" having sprung a leak, left for Waitara to repair. Hakopa went to Hospital. Overland Mail left for Auckland. Tamati Waka came to Barracks, and told me that Toheroa had been beating Perewiki, wife of Karipi, in a dispute about land. The "Diana" got on shore, on the South bank at Waitara, yesterday. Court Day. Duncan v. Foreman, the elder- debt. judgement - defendant to pay 7/- weekly, until the debt is discharged. The other cases settled out of Court. A Meeting of the Taranaki Book Club committee held at the Post Office this evening. A party of Waitara natives refused to allow the "Diana" to be repaired, under a charge of £5. Hakopa left Hospital. Overland Mail from Wellington. General muster. Meeting of Trustees to the New Plymouth Savings Bank, held at the Post Office. Henry Lawler, having robbed some European sawyers at Waitara, absconded. Sunday Parade at ten o'clock. Medland engaged at the Police Office. Between 7 and 8 p.m. John Burns and James Gordon taken into custody for disorderly conduct and locked up. Peter McDermott found in Mr. Ryan's house, in the maid-servant's room, at a late hour, and given in charge. He was liberated on bail. H. Halse v. Burns and Gordon; fined 5/- each and costs. Ryan v. McDermott; defendant reprimanded and dismissed. Hakopa went to Omata to see Te Ngahuru. The schooner "Lucy James", 40 tons, Joyce, 2 days from Wellington; cargo general. Received a box of stationery for you, by yesterday's arrival. Tamati te Ngahuru attended at Police Office in consequence of a complaint from Mr. Cutfield against Nopera for setting fire to the fern in the Tataraimaka Block, with a view to destroy the grass there. Wati Peketahi came to Barracks, and complained of not being paid for a pig, which he supplied to the Master of the "Diana." Hoera, of Moturoa, seen in Taranaki Hotel, by Tamati of Waitara, and afterwards found drunk at the Kawau, where I, and several natives, remained, in order to prevent him doing mischief. Overland Mail from Auckland. The "Victory" had arrived with passengers, for that, and this place. Hakopa left for Whanganui with despatches for the Governor-in-Chief. Private Stewart returned from the South, between 12 and 1 in the morning. I received two letters from you, dated Hawke's Bay 24th. January. General muster and drill. Delivered your letters to Captain King, Dr. Wilson, and other gentlemen. An information laid by the Police against Charles Foot, for selling spirituous liquors to one of the native race, named Hoera.
