Letter from O.L.W. Bousfield to Donald McLean Esq. dated 2nd. July 1857. Maraekakahu 2nd, July 1857. My dear Sir, I have the pleasure to inform you that the survey of your selections on this Run is complete. I have, however, suggested to your brother that it would be desirable, in order to render the occupation of available land more complete, that you purchase another small lot or two. To illustrate this suggestion, I have furnished him with tracings upon which you will perceive marked and lettered all the required purchases, accompanied by a schedule of all the lands already bought, and the remaining quantity required. I have, I believe, bought your favourite grey "Argyle" from your brother; and I am sanquine as to the prospects held out by getting such a mount. I don't wish you to understand from this remark that I anticipate obtaining a more extensive view of the surrounding country, from the back of the beastie. You comprehend the word "Prospects" is used symbolically. I trust it will be my good fortune to see you before you leave this Province; or failing that, that I may see you in Auckland, whither I propose going, en route to Melbourne, and the rest of those notorious haunts, - in the ensuing Summer. I am, my dear Sir, yours faithfully (Signed) O.L.W. Bousfield To:- Donald McLean Esq.
