Letter from F. Gascoyne to Donald McLean Esq. dated Sept. 1858. Aorangi 2nd. September 1858 My dear Sir, I received your letter and also one from my mother a few days ago; and send you these few lines by way of answer to both, for the present; as I am very busy now, as John McLachlin has been gored in the leg by a cow, and will not be able to walk for two or three weeks, so that I have shepherding added to my other occupations. Except the above accident, everything is getting on very well. We have a good many acres in cultivation; about 4 in wheat; 2 in grass and clover; 1 in oats; and several ploughed for potatoes. The sheep are lambing at present, and have dropped a good many twins. They are in very good condition and few lambs have died. The horses are all right; but my mare is not in foal. I am working 8 bullocks now, having broken in a pair lately. Your brothers Alex, and the Captain are quite well, and the latter likes the place very much, and is busy at present making a garden, with the help of Mr. Innes, who is also well. Please to give my love to my mother, and tell her I will write soon. Hoping that yourself and Douglas are well; and with kind regards to Mrs. J. McLean, I remain yours very truly (Signed) F. Gascoyne P.S. Pray excuse the writing. To:- Donald McLean Esq. Auckland.
