Letter from Donald McLean, Land Commissioner, to the Honble, the Colonial Secretary, dated 15th. July 1850. relative to the Interior boundaries of the Wangaehu and Rangitikei purchases. Wanganui, 15th. July 1850 Sir, As various differences may hereafter arise from the undefined state of the Interior boundary of the Rangitikei and Wangaehu purchases, - I have the honor to acquaint you for the information of His Excellency, the Lieutenant Governor, that I am desirous, and shall be prepared, with the Native Chiefs, and Mr. Park, on Monday next, to commence cutting an Interior boundary line from the South side of the Whanganui river, to the Wangaehu; afterwards I should wish to proceed up the Turakina River as far as the Ngatiapa claim extends; thence I should direct a line to be cut across towards the Rangitikei bounding the Interior of that Block. But as this would be a tedious and difficult service to perform during the Winter months, I would only recommend a commencement to be made now; as the completion of the line could be more easily accomplished at a much less expense during the Summer months. His Excellency wished me to furnish an estimate of the expenses attending the cutting of this boundary; which it would be difficult, from the various contingencies that arise, to furnish. I may add, however, that if this service is approved, the utmost care shall be taken that it is conducted on the most economical terms that can be made with the Native Chiefs, and others who must necessarily accompany me, to witness the boundary. I have the honor to remain, Sir, Your most obedient servant, (Signed) Donald McLean. Land Commissioner. To:- The Honble, The Colonial Secretary Wellington. Referred to the Principal Agent, New Zealand Company, July 22nd. 1850. (Signed) A. Domett. Mr. Domett, Refer this to the New Zealand Company's Agent, and request he will be good enough to state whether he wishes the service to be undertaken on behalf of the New Zealand Company, or not. It is one relative to which Mr. Fox has, I think, already on some previous occasion, expressed a desire that it should be completed, and Mr. McLean's attention as long ago called to the importance of obviating as far as possible, all causes of future difficulty or dispute, by endeavouring as speedily as he could, to get the inland boundary settled and defined; but owing to various circumstances, he has heretofore been prevented from getting the service executed. (Signed) G. Eyre. 22nd. July 1850.
