Letter from H.T. Kemp to Donald McLean Esq. dated 28th. July 1855 Waimate Bay of Islands 28th. July 1855. My dear McLean, This I think will find you in Auckland. I therefore drop a line to say that everything is quiet, and, I think, going on well. I have just completed the examination and general inspection of two Blocks, although the weather has been anything but propitious for the undertaking. To-morrow I enter upon the question of the which you know from experience is the most unpleasant stage of these proceedings. Finally, in ten days or a fortnight, I hope to be able to report them as complete; and I think a good commencement. One Block will be about 7,000 acres, both intervening and connecting former purchases. By my note, which found you off to the Waipa, you will have ascertained a few points which are desirable should be attended to by the Government without delay. I shall do the best I can with the funds, until I hear what arrangements you have made. The Colonel has, I suppose, put off the Assembly for the benefit of his successor. Perhaps he may have to do so as the time of the Governor's arrival seems uncertain. The Country is very quiet; and of course, as having been Townspeople for many years, we feel it a little. Shall be glad to hear that you have succeeded where you have been; and looking for a line from you, as from the seat of Government, and of news. Believe me, faithfully yours, (Signed) H.T. Kemp. To:- D. McLean Esq.
