New Plymouth, December 8, 1855 My dear Sir, The native quarrel seems to be gradually dying out neither party molesting each other. The habit of moving about with arms is less observable and more time is devoted to trade and agriculture. The training of the Militia does not occasion any excitement amongst the natives and I think good results would follow if it were more general. I suppose we could turn out 500 men capable of bearing arms, a respectable number in accordance with the natives. The Hinia natives are still anxious that the Mangaraka should be sold. Mahau tells me that the offer has his support but that he is afraid other natives might offer the land between Mangaraka and Waiongaua. A letter from you to him will not be thrown away, in the meantime I am gradually getting him into harness. Last Monday a party of natives belonging to W. Kingi left for Waikanae to collect their remaining property after which they will return here. I hope you will get me relieved from the Interpretership as it would be impossible for me to bestow the necessary attention to the other important offices as scarcely a day passes without more or less summonses being issued against natives. Wiremu and Tawera continue here and receive rations daily as ordered. Faithfully yours, H. Halse.
