Taranaki, 12th June, 1854. My dear Sir, I fully intended to have held my meeting on Friday or Saturday but the weather was so very bad it was impossible to get the Natives together, today, Thos. Williams and several of the Natives have gone to New Plymouth to see the Superintendent about a compensation case for a Taranaki native who received an injury accidently from a White man some little time since. The Natives have all promised to meet tomorrow, and I expect a large assembly, I hope it will terminate more favorably than the last. As tomorrow is Auckland mail day I shall not be able to send you an official report of the meeting till next Post day without the steamer should call, if she does I will write by her. Since the meeting at +Manawapou Paratine (Kopara) has been to Oakura endeavouring to induce John (Kohuru) to alter his mind, but he sticks firm and says he is determined to sell. Old Erangi has been to Paringa and after a long talk he has partly promised to remain quiet altho' he still objects to the sale of Land. I have had some very tough arguments with him, he says he knows the Land will go, but he dosn't want to see it. Jack the Policeman has just this minute come here, he tells me he is going to offer Land for sale at the meeting tomorrow he is now engaged writing out the names of the Boundaries --- I think the Natives are gradually coming round and I hope before long the majority of them will view the Land Question in a very different light to what they do at present.
