Mount Herbert. 9th. August 1859. My dear Maclean, I enclose some (to me unintelligent) memoranda from Hatoni for you, in relation to his land claims. He desires me to say that he wishes (which he says is coming to Philip and himself) till you come to Waipukarau, and not togive it to Horomona or any body. I am sorry to hear there is a sort of hitch in the Pukepu affair, as I was in hopes you would be able to break ground there. Roy once removed I dare say the opposition to the sale will fall to the ground. Is there any truth in the report of disturbances in Wardrop between the races. Featherston writes me that the trade in arms is almost the only business doing in Wellington, and says the Governor will have incurred a very grave responsibility if any outbreak should take place, from having allowed the trade in guns and ammunition. At Napier there is every opportunity of getting arms, indeed there now appears to be no restriction, and the impression decidedly is that there is none. Would if not be well for the Magistrates to issue notices that any person found dealing in arms or ammunition will be severely dealt with and offering rewards for information sufft. to convict?
