Thames Nov. 13 1871 My dear Sir No doubt you will have heard from Dr Pollen all about his and Mackays doings with respect to the extension of the telegraph since the date of my last report. They have pushed me aside entirely not that I care through whom the telegraph is completed so long as it is accomplished - to me it appears so great a public benefit that local jealousies should be laid aside and on aid another in its completion. There is a rumour here that O'Neill is going to resign his seat in the House for the Thames, and that Mackay is doing what he is to make political capital and take his place. The messengers sent by Te Hira have returned from the aori king. I send you copies of Te Hira's letter and Tawhiaos reply - you will note with great satisfaction the tone of Tawhiaos letter. Poor old Taraia is sinking fast he is unable now to move without assistance in every other way he is healthy. The boys at the Thames School are making very satisfactory progress. The forest purchase is at a stand still for the present pending the arrival of Captn. Heale. In every other respect also matters throughout the whole District have an encouraging appearance. Your most obedient Servt. E. W. Puckey
