Tuesday, 24 Nov. 57. My dear Sir, I have little to communicate by this post beyond a dispute between some Waiuakaiho and Katere natives about a small piece of land recently cultivated by the former in the Waiwakaiho purchase. Successful as Paki has been in preventing the settlers entering upon that land, he is no match for the resident sellers of it, headed by Hone Ropiha and Te Ahoaho, who told him to go about his business, and if they did him wrong, let him summon them before the Kaiirakaua. I should state that the Prov. Govt. is about to build a bridge over the Waiwakaiho inland of the former site, and is anxious to form a new line of road through the open land fenced in by the Katere natives, and I was requested to ascertain if opposition would be offered to the deviation of road. I did so, through Hone Ropiha, and was informed by him that Paki was very obstinate and would oppose it. Last Saturday Paki called at my office but meeting Raniera and Tahana there, both of whom disapprove of his conduct, declined to enter into it. The excellent article on the proposal of a Maori King in the Messenger has been much talked of by the Natives hereabouts. Mr. Parris is not moving in the Waiangana question the Huirangi opposition has not yet subsided and no reply has been received from Ngatiruanui. It is however understood from a letter sent to Arapata that if he consents to the Wakangerengere boundary, all will be well. Mr. Sunley has been elected for the Provincial Council in the place of Mr. H. Richmond, whose brother James was defeated by a majority of 61.
